Not the Will of the People

A resident of Mon State who spoke to Burma Election Tracker said: "The candidates competed with each other in our district. Only the USDP and the National Unity Party (NUP) competed in our village. I didn't vote for any of those parties. I just want to vote for Daw Aung San Su Kyi and I don't vote for any party without her. I have some friends who are the members of USDP but I didn't vote for their parties either. There were security guards in the office of Ward Peace and Development Council on the election day.

A resident of Kachin State who spoke to Burma Election Tracker said: "There will be no change. Although we participate for the good, we already know the SPDC is evil. I did not vote because the SPDC is doing what they want to."

A resident of Rangoon Division who spoke to Burma Election Tracker said: "Nobody in this household household voted, neither in the election nor for the constitution in 2008. I do not accept either of them - the constitution or the election. I don't like them."

A resident of Mandalay Division who spoke to Burma Election Tracker said: "I didn't vote because the military regime always made up their minds and I believe nothing will change."

A resident of Shan State who spoke to Burma Election Tracker said: "In our region, no one went to vote. Nobody came to inform us about the election and how to vote either."

A resident of Kachin State who spoke to Burma Election Tracker said: "We didn't vote. In our region, we don't like the USDP. Most of the people voted for the ethnic parties and they won after the votes were counted in the evening. But the next morning we heard that the UDP had won. There was security outside and in the polling station and it was known that there was no free voting. In our house, there were 6 eligible voters but they came and gave us only 3 voting cards. So our house could only cast 3 votes. We feel that they bully the ethnic people."

A resident of Rangoon Division who spoke to Burma Election Tracker said: "My sister had to vote for the USDP because she's a staff member of the USDA. There are 4 people eligible to vote in our family and USDP forcibly asked our family to vote for them. USDP frequently came to our house and organized to canvass for votes by offering to pave the roads. I didn't vote and I'm not interested, but I know that the USDP will win the seat because they have already arranged for that to happen."

Lack of confidence in the USDP controlled voting process was commonly reported to Burma Election Tracker. One citizen from Rangoon stated: "I didn't vote because I know that the USDP is crooked in many ways." | USDPမွနည္းမ်ိဳးစံုျဖင့္လိမ္ေနတာသိေနေသာေၾကင့္မဲသြားမေပးပါ။

A Shan state citizen explained to Burma Election Tracker why he did not vote: "I don't vote because this election's unfair. The USDP has compelled people to vote for them in advance votes. This election will change nothing.
